CRU was saddened to hear that a long-term ally and collaborator, Ric Thompson, has died following a long illness. Ric was well known across Australia for his work through Inclusion Works in Townsville, and later through Great Ideas in Action. He was equally well known for his colourful shirts, wicked sense of humour and enduring affection for his beloved Magnetic Island home.Ric presented for CRU many times on how to uncover the possibilities of community through Asset Based Community Development and why formal services and practices like person centred planning are never enough! He focused on how you can discover the opportunities in community, and connect people in through shared passions, strengths and gifts. He was unwavering in his commitment to full citizenship and rights for people with disability, and their capacity to take up valued roles for people with disability, enjoy real friendships, full participation and belonging. Ric’s Commandments for Community Inclusion start and end with the importance of promoting, facilitating and maintaining the belief that there is nobody [our community] doesn’t need.As well as the people with disability Ric directly supported, he introduced many Queenslanders to key concepts and strategies that they took into their own lives, such as identifying the Third Places in a community or using the Power of 10 to unlock creative thinking. Ric’s seminal paper, “The Art of Asking”, argued that communities often exclude people with disability not because people are unwilling to include, but because no one has asked. He explained what makes it difficult to ask, the traps that can prevent an effective ask, and the importance of knowing who to ask, how to ask, when to ask and where to ask when seeking community.Ric’s warmth, creativity, values, energy, clarity and positivity will be sorely missed. His legacy is not only that he reminded us of the power of community, but that he showed us how people with disability can be fully embraced through his powerful examples, clear frameworks and practical tools.
