Finding People To Be There: Rebuilding a sense of belonging
by Neil and Penny Barringham
A resource for people who want to assist in the facilitation of someone’s belonging. It contains some of the story of A Place to Belong, some relevant literature about belonging and a range of models and strategies that anyone can use.
Drawn from the experience of working with people who are isolated and vulnerable, this resource offers ideas and strategies for responding to people’s expressed need to belong, focusing on how opportunities for relationships can be increased.
Neil and Penny Barringham have drawn on the wisdom of many years experience in community development and supporting people who are socially isolated and vulnerable. They have worked primarily with people who have mental health challenges and have been living in institutions prior to reconnecting with the wider community. As they and many others have come to know being out of an institution and in community does not in and of itself create connection and a sense of belonging for people living with mental illness.
