All Students Learning Together in Inclusive Classrooms: What does inclusive practice look like?

March 13, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Light meal from 5:30pm

Discussion will commence at 6:15pm until 8:30pm

This evening discussion is designed to help parents recognise and work towards responsive and inclusive school and classroom practices. Christa will clarify common educational terms underpinning inclusive classroom practices and describe how these practices can enhance the learning and inclusion of ALL students. These terms will include: differentiation, Universal Design for Learning, adaptation, accommodation, modification, and Response-to-Intervention.

Christa will also discuss research evidence on what best helps students with disability to learn effectively, access the curriculum and participate alongside their peers.

The discussion will include the roles of teachers, teacher aides, and student peers in supporting full inclusion. Finally, Christa will emphasise the critical importance of parent-school collaborations in maximising the educational experiences and long term success for students with disability.

Dr Christa van Kraayenoord is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at The University of Queensland. She is a former Director of the Schonell Special Education Research Centre and teaches courses in literacy education, diversity and learning, and learning difficulties.

Her research interests include: learning disabilities, literacy, pedagogical practice, teachers’ professional learning and school improvement. She is on the editorial board of national and international journals and is the current President of the International Academy for Research in Learning disabilities.
