It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of CRU Life Member, Mike Duggan. Mike made an immense contribution to CRU over decades. He served as a management committee member for 23 years, 16 of those as president, and was famous for his ‘From the President’ reflections in CRUcial Times.
To get a sense of Mike’s contribution to the multitude of communities of which he was a part, we have made available his chapter from the CRU publication ‘Gathering the Wisdom’. Mike’s chapter was called Reflections on my life and can be downloaded here.
More recently, Mike has been a member of our Stewardship Group, and has continued to contribute to CRU and support CRU events.
Mike will be remembered not only for his generosity, humour, intellect and wisdom, but also the clarity with which he reminded us of our shared humanity, the value of each person, and the importance of a life committed to a purpose higher than ourselves.
In the words of Mike:
“I propose that love is the indispensable ingredient in all of the questioning about life, faith and hope. Central to this quest is being able to love ourselves humbly. Once we are able to love in this way, we can then love each other humbly. Words such as these make us feel uncomfortable. Dominant societal values also work against this: stringent individualism is certainly not encouraging of our opening ourselves up to others. It is certainly not until we are able open ourselves up to others, making ourselves vulnerable to others, that we will find the central core and meaning in life.”
