Jane Sherwin – Valued Roles: How do we navigate through points of change?

November 3, 2014 @ 6:15 pm - 8:30 pm

** Part of CRU’s discussion series for family members **

Valued Roles: navigating through points of change

Monday 3rd November: 6:15pm – 8:30pm (light meal from 5:45pm)

Transition points in life are very important, for example, moving from school to work and moving from the family home to one’s own home.  Changes in roles are part and parcel of transition, but people with disability can be particularly vulnerable at such times to experiencing a loss of valued roles and imposition or retention of negative roles.

This session on transition will look at the implications of role ‘exit’ and role ‘stripping’, when roles are removed without the agreement of the individual. Strategies to support the individual and counteract or guard against negative roles, and build and protect valued roles will be explored.

Who should attend?

These evening discussions are for family members (parents, brothers and sisters, other family members, close friends) who want to explore how to build and protect valued social roles.  Attending both evening sessions, and the workshop on 10th October, will maximise learning.

The Presenter

Jane Sherwin is a Queensland-based consultant who has been involved in the lives of people with disabilities since the late 1970s. Jane has been involved in social change efforts since the early 1990s.  Prior to this, she worked as an occupational therapist, manager, and lecturer. Jane is a Senior Social Role Valorisation (SRV) Trainer.  These sessions draw on SRV theory.
